GAO: Prevention Spending Not Transparent, Outcomes Unmeasurable

“A new report from the General Accounting Office (GAO) suggests that federal officials are mishandling a prominent Obamacare program and taxpayers are suffering a huge loss because of it, one that exceeds billions of dollars.”

“Federal officials established the Prevention and Public Health Fund, under Obamacare, to distribute taxpayer money to each of the 50 states. In turn, officials in each state educate citizens on good nutrition habits.”

“Those same federal officials, specifically those in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) are providing very little transparency or accountability to taxpayers. Specifically, HHS officials are not forthcoming enough on what they do with the Fund, according to a statement that Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), seen discussing Obamacare in this video,  released this week.”

“Coburn analyzed the GAO’s findings, which he says prove that the Fund will not lead to any future financial savings in terms of health care transactions.”

““The fund has instead become a slush fund for bureaucrats to fund their own priorities,” said Coburn spokeswoman Becky Bernhardt, in a statement.”

“taxpayers still have no formal way to measure whether the recipients of this money have used it successfully.”
