Let’s see how many of the latest arguments against repealing Obamacare we can knock down in the next few minutes, shall we?
‘Obamacare was a Republican idea.’ No, it was hatched at a left-wing activist conference in 2007 to make insurance companies ‘wither on the vine’. Moreover, the GOP was shut out of the legislative process and Obamacare was passed without a single Republican vote.
‘The Republicans had no ideas.’ Actually, John McCain put forth a plan that Obama’s advisors liked better than Obamacare. Not only that, the House Republicans had a bill that was voted down, right before Obamacare was voted up.
Let’s stop for a second and think about those first two arguments. How is it the Republicans had no ideas if Obamacare WAS their idea? It doesn’t make any sense. Any port in a storm, I suppose.
‘The cancer survivor who challenged Paul Ryan this week wouldn’t be alive today without Obamacare.’ Hi risk pools are a better answer to the preexisting conditions problem, and about 35 states had them before Obamacare was passed.
‘Obamacare covered 20 million people.’ Not after you back out all the people who previously had their own plans, and all the new beneficiaries who were previously eligible for Medicaid. Enrollment on the exchanges is only half what they originally expected, and seven out of ten people who benefit from Obamacare only do so because now they’re on welfare – Medicaid. Besides, focusing on the number of people covered without regard to true access or cost is like boasting about how many yards you gained after losing a football game.
‘Obamacare extended the Medicare trust fund for 11 years.’ Maybe, but only because the ACA chopped $716 billion out of Medicare to fund Obamacare. So, seniors were hurt – not helped – by Obamacare.
‘Those mean Republicans refused to make legislative fixes to Obamacare.’ Au contraire. Congress – including the Republican House – passed 24 fixes to Obamacare that the President signed. Not only that, he changed Obamacare at least 43 times on his own. He got everything he wanted. The meltdown is HIS fault.
‘If you repeal Obamacare, grandma will be living in your house.’ This is just stupid. Obamacare, as it stands today, has nothing at all to do with long-term care. In fact, the long-term care provision – called the CLASS Act – was one of the first parts of Obamacare to blow up completely. It was repealed after the Obama administration decided it was completely unworkable.
How am I doing so far?
Now let’s switch gears and go on offense. Who said:
- Obamacare is “the craziest thing in the world.” Bill Clinton, a Democrat.
- Obamacare is “no longer affordable.” Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton, a Democrat
- Obamacare is a “roller coaster”. Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat
- Obamacare is a “train wreck”. Former senator Max Baucus, a Democrat.
Finally, the coup de grâce: Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, a Democrat, defected this week and said he is willing to work with the Obama administration to replace Obamacare.
Even top Democrats don’t like Obamacare.
Game, set, and match.
